The CPAP Comfort Guide: Solutions for Nasal and Sinus Relief

man with cpap

If you have medically diagnosed sleep-related breathing disorder your doctor may recommend continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Using a CPAP machine every night helps you sleep better. Plus, it can lead to a variety of improvements in your health and wellbeing.

It’s understandable that many people might stop or limit their CPAP use because of common side effects, like nasal and sinus discomfort.

Here, you’ll learn how and why CPAP causes nasal and sinus issues. You’ll also learn how to relieve nasal discomfort with some simple adjustments and tweaks to your regular CPAP routine.

Why CPAP Can Cause Nasal and Sinus Discomfort

CPAP machines are designed to make breathing easier while you sleep. They draw in the air from your room and filter it to ensure it’s clean. The machine then pressurises the air before sending it through a hose to the mask you wear. This gentle airflow helps to keep your airway open and clear all night, helping you enjoy a more restful sleep.

Many CPAP users experience nasal congestion or dryness due to the pressurised air flowing through the nasal passages. This can lead to symptoms such as a stuffy or runny nose, irritation, and even nosebleeds.

Nasal dryness or congestion can be a bit annoying, but it’s worth trying to manage issues rather than give up therapy. CPAP provides significant health and well-being benefits when you use it regularly, including:

  • Improved sleep quality
  • Reduction in daytime sleepiness
  • Less snoring
  • Better mood, alertness and daily functioning due to better sleep.

Finding ways to address your nasal concerns can help you stick to regular CPAP use, reaping its benefits.

Tips for Nasal and Sinus Relief

CPAP therapy can result in nasal stuffiness. It can also dry out the mucosal lining of your nose and sinuses. Adding FLO Sinus Care and FLO Nozoil Nasal Spray to your routine to help keep your nose clear and lubricated may help make your CPAP therapy more comfortable.

FLO Sinus Care is a gentle saline wash that helps ease congestion by thinning excess mucus in your sinuses. The solution mimics your body’s own fluids, so it’s gentle enough to use daily, or as often as you need.

FLO Nozoil is a hydrating nasal spray that lubricates the lining of your nasal passages, relieving uncomfortable dryness. It can also relieve crusting in the nose. FLO Nozoil also provides a moisturizing barrier to protect your nasal tissue from the drying effects of air.

HOW TO USE FLO SINUS CARE

  1. Add 200ml of lukewarm pre-boiled water to the FLO bottle and add the contents of one FLO sachet. Close the cap and gently shake till dissolved.
  2. Lean over a basin or sink and tuck your chin towards your chest and insert the top of the cap gently into one nostril until it forms a tight seal.
  3. Breathe through your mouth. If you don’t, you could accidentally take a gulp of the saline.
  4. Gently squeeze the bottle until the solution starts to drain from your other nostril. Use half of the solution and then repeat with the other nostril.
  5. When finished, gently blow your nose.
  6. Clean and dry the bottle and cap ready for next time.

Simple Adjustments to Enhance CPAP Comfort

To ensure you’re comfortable with your CPAP therapy, it’s essential to pay attention to the settings and care of your machine, as well as your mask type. Your machine provider or clinician is the best resource for making these adjustments, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them. Here’s a helpful list of questions you can ask:

  • Can I adjust the humidity on my CPAP machine? Many machines allow you to adjust the humidity gradually. This can help you achieve a comfortable humidity level that relieves dryness without causing discomfort. If your machine does not have a humidity adjustment, you can use a separate humidifier to humidify the air in your room at night.
  • How do I properly clean and care for my CPAP machine? Regularly cleaning your CPAP machine, including filters and masks, is vital. Cleaning helps lower the risk of infection. It will also help remove irritants, like dust or other allergens, that can contribute to a stuffy nose and sinuses.
  • Would changing my mask type help? The right face mask can help manage the various side effects of CPAP therapy.
  • Does my mask fit properly? Check with your clinician or machine supplier to make sure that our mask fits properly and does not leak. Some side effects can also be caused by air leakage from your mask.

Both FLO Sinus Care and FLO Nozoil are suitable for daily use, and for use alongside other medications.
